Minimum of maintenance

Extensive xero flor system basically supplies and maintains itself, natural environmental processes in the bases provide the nourishment for plant vegetation. The state of stress at plants caused, for instance, by the lack of water is balanced by the use of specially chosen mechanisms. On the one hand, we have old plants dying out, and on the other hand – natural seeding and development of young plants, which occurs in closed circuits with constant biological renewal and plant regeneration. A careful circuit, which may be supported cautiously, should not be treated with intensive maintenance means. Therefore, it is forbidden to use herbicides of any sort. Damages to the vegetation are also brought by the introduction of plants which are alien to the entire system and breaking natural regeneration by early removal of seeds. The minimum maintenance care includes sowing appropriate fertilizers, regular control and cleaning of roof drainages in the spring and autumn, and removing the roots of alien plants, together with alien bushes and brushwood in the bank area. During long-term draught, the ground should be fertilized.

Watering
During the growth phase, that is shortly after planting the roof with extensive green, the whole area should be watered so, that the mats and the ground absorb a maximum amount of water. Then, in the following two – four weeks after arranging the rolls, the whole area should be sprayed with water. An extensive roof after the growth phase does not require any watering in general, but during long-term draught, it is recommended to drench the green areas with water.

Fertilizing
With planting with extensive green, fertilizing may be reduced to strewing some fertilizer in the spring and the autumn. It is recommended to use organic fertilizer of prolonged action. The amount of the strewn fertilizer should balance around 5 to 30 g/m2 depending on the fertilizer type.

Removing weeds
Through the influence of natural process (influence of wind, carrying seeds by birds), weeds start to crop up on roof surfaces. They should be removed with their roots. It is also advisable to always remove seed tree sprouts, thistles and strongly expanding plant sprouts. They should be removed manually. Plant remains should be removed entirely from the roof.

Control of the drainage installation
Hollows in the roof and places located in direct neighbourhood to roof drainages are the critical points of increased water collecting, but also the points of the fastest expansion of weeds. These places should be controlled thoroughly, and the weeds, together with the plants growing around these places should be definitely removed.

Performance
Due to the fact, that green roofs are performed as a result of a cooperation between at least two companies (roofing – responsible for the sealing of the roof, and a gardening or a similar company – responsible for arranging plants beginning with the seal layer), it is suggested to divide the tasks. The gardening or similar company responsible for settling the layers of the green roof from the hydro-sealing upwards creates the green area, cares for it and gives a warranty for it.
